New Cloud Infrastructure Services Available to California Researchers, Educators

The services, from CenturyLink, FireHost, and Verizon, were procured through an RFP and are available to all members of the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC).

This week the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) announced the availability of a suite of Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud services for its member institutions in California’s research and education community.

The services, from CenturyLink, FireHost, and Verizon, were procured through an RFP and are available to all network members, which include the California Community Colleges, the California State University and the University of California.

The services, detailed here, include multilayer security, storage, virtualization, servers, applications, networking, disaster recovery, data backup, and more.

"CENIC’s vision in acquiring cloud services will greatly benefit the California Community Colleges," Tim Calhoon, executive director of the California Community Colleges Technology Center, said in a statement. "Our colleges now have the ability to access superior virtual data center services directly peered with the CENIC network. The speed and security afforded by this arrangement will enable the colleges to further assure that the information and online applications used by over 2 million community college students, faculty, and staff, are always available."

CENIC is best known for operating CalREN, the California Research and Education Network, a high-bandwidth, high-capacity Internet backbone tailored for the state’s research and education institutions.
