On the Industry Insider — California home page, the new tools can be found under the Insider Tools drop-down menu. There, members will find:
- Links to organizational charts for California state agencies, departments, offices and boards.
- Links to the organizational charts and enterprise catalogs of the state’s 10 largest counties, 10 largest cities and five largest special districts. This chart also includes links to each department’s enterprise catalog — a list of the systems and solutions that the jurisdiction uses, along with downloadable data.
The data in both of these tools is updated by the jurisdiction, and Industry Insider attempts to update them as warranted.
San Diego Chief Information Officer Jonathan Behnke sees the benefits of these tools to those working in government.
“Having a single compilation of California public-sector enterprise catalogs and org charts would significantly improve our ability to collaborate and share successes and lessons learned across the state,” Behnke told Industry Insider.
The tools are especially helpful to those in the private sector as they target government opportunities.
“Any vendor selling to these agencies will benefit from having an understanding of the current enterprise systems and organizational structure,” said Mike Driessen, vice president of Subscription Services for e.Republic, parent of Industry Insider. “It can help steer your sales strategy and supports an important tenet in selling to government: ‘Know before you go.’”
Under California state law enacted in 2016, public agencies and departments are required to create an accessible online catalog of enterprise systems and to update those catalogs annually. The catalog must disclose a list of the enterprise systems used by the agency and, for each system, must also disclose all of the following:
- Current system vendor
- Current system product
- A brief statement of the system’s purpose
- A general description of categories or types of data
- The department that serves as the system’s primary custodian
- How frequently system data is collected
- How frequently system data is updated
In addition to the org charts and enterprise catalogs, the Insider Tools include a host of other features, such as an IT Spending Dashboard, links to exclusive CIO interviews that have appeared in Industry Insider in recent years, breakdowns of California government agencies’ budgets (including IT spend), and a database of state government IT contracts.
