The two speakers, Paul Ong and Gian-Claudia Sciara, will discuss their work on selecting indicators to measure trends as they relate to SB 375, the Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Act of 2008.
Ong is a research professor at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs and director of the Center for Neighborhood Knowledge. Sciara is an assistant professor of Community and Regional Planning at the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture and a fellow of the Snell Endowed Chair in Transportation.
The researchers focused on creating metrics to measure the progress California is making toward reaching the 2020 and 2035 greenhouse gas reduction targets, “in any metric deemed appropriate by CARB,” according to the February target update document.
After examining existing data sets and indicators, the researchers piloted a monitoring system in Los Angeles County. This also highlighted the need for better information sharing systems among local jurisdictions.
