Sacramento State University students will have a new learning management system beginning in the fall of 2018. The transition to Canvas comes after a yearlong research and recommendation process.
A steering committee made up of students and faculty evaluated Blackboard Ultra, D2L Brightspace, Instructure Canvas and Moodle.
Based on campuswide feedback, the committee recommended Brightspace and Canvas for sandbox tests.
Three times as many students preferred Canvas to Brightspace. Canvas has been used at many community colleges in California since 2015, and many classes can be migrated over from Blackboard 9.1.
Blackboard was not considered as an option because faculty members believed that the company would discontinue support of non-Ultra products.
The steering committee also noted that updates for Canvas would be made more frequently and would require less downtime than Blackboard.
