Sacramento Police Tout Virtual Neighborhood Watch

The Sacramento Police Department announced the first anniversary of its partnership with Nextdoor, the San Francisco-based social network touted as a ‘virtual neighborhood watch.’

"We are very excited about the impact our partnership with Nextdoor has had on our efforts to improve communication and safety for all of our communities," said Police Chief Samuel D. Somers Jr. in a release.

Residents sign up for Nextdoor by entering their home address, name and email. Users are grouped by neighborhood so that messages back and forth — from neighbors or the police department – are specific to that location. The free social network helps connect neighbors to announce a lost pet, suspicious activity, garage sale or anything else that neighbors might have discussed face-to-face in a bygone era.
