A school spending transparency website has been recognized as the 2014 Project of the Year by the Project Management Institute – Sacramento Valley Chapter (PMI-SVC).
Trackprop30.ca.gov tracks district- and school-level spending in the wake of Proposition 30, a temporary tax increase approved in 2012 to stabilize K-12 and community college funding. The measure has raised more than $13 billion so far, according to the state Department of Finance.
The website explains what Prop 30 is and how schools are affected; gives access to the raw, comma delimited (CSV) data; and includes a glossary and California map of the information.
The data is searchable by school, district or community college. For example, the website shows that Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., received nearly $7.3 million in Prop 30 funding during 2012-’13, equaling 9 percent of its total funding for the year.
The website was created and will be updated through at least 2019 via a partnership involving the California State Controller’s Office, California Department of Education, Department of Finance, and California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.
The seventh-annual PMI-SVC award recognized the project for "accomplishments of a project and project team for superior performance and exemplary execution of project management using processes and approaches that are consistent with A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide – Fifth Edition, released in 2013)."
According to the State Controller’s Office, beginning in summer 2015, when they first become available, visitors to Trackprop30.ca.gov will be able to read audit reports to determine if an entity has spent Prop 30 funds as the law requires.
