State Agencies Recruiting for Tech Management Positions

Departments are seeking to hire a data center chief, a branch chief, a senior technical adviser/developer, and a network engineer.

Four departments in state government are recruiting for specialty positions in technology.

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is seeking a data center chief (IT manager II) to oversee what the department calls “one of the largest, most complex data centers in the state,” according to the job posting. The chief “has full management responsibility for policies, standards, processes, design, implementation, maintenance and operation of the CalPERS Data Center, the computer room at CalPERS Emergency Operation Center, Public Cloud Infrastructure, and other core infrastructure assets in collocated facilities,” the duty statement says.

“The Data Center Chief has full management responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and controlling the most critical and highly sensitive Data Center, public cloud and core infrastructure operations and interdepartmental infrastructure projects,” says the duty statement. “The Data Center manager also focuses on providing innovate technology solutions to problems that can impact the future of the CalPERS Data Center by staying ahead of technology trends by research of current and future technologies. The Information Technology Manager II works primarily in the System Engineering domain.”

Desirable qualifications include:
  • Knowledge and expertise managing a highly complex and sensitive data center/hybrid environment
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and trends of public administration, including management, organization, planning, cost benefit analysis, budgeting, and project management
  • Ability to plan, develop and implement technological solutions that are essential to CalPERS’ mission, and the delivery of critical services to CalPERS and its members
  • Knowledge and experience working with enterprise data backup and restore services
  • Knowledge and experience working with IaaS, PaaS and SaaS environments
  • Knowledge and experience working with public cloud vendors like Azure, AWS and GCP

The monthly salary range is $10,167 to $12,359, and the application deadline is Aug. 20.

The California Department of Developmental Services is recruiting for a branch chief (IT manager I) to manage the Technology Business Management Branch. The position includes oversight and management of IT administrative functions, supervising and managing subordinate supervisors to optimize processes. “The individual responds to audits and ensures implementation and adherence to accepted improvement recommendations,” the job posting says. “The individual will work closely with the Administrative Division to achieve goals and participate in strategic planning efforts.”

Requirements for the position include:
  • Ten or more years of related experience in the IT finance sector, including five-plus years’ experience in financial reporting, financial planning, strategic planning and/or annual budgeting
  • Five-plus years of management skills with a passion for, and demonstrated experience in, inspiring and developing individuals to meet their highest level of potential
  • Proven knowledge of vendor management, strategic planning and execution, project management, and best practices implementation
  • Experience with IT disciplines including infrastructure, servers, networks, databases and applications. Understanding of software and hardware acquisition, maintenance, support models, including on-prem, hybrid and cloud.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is recruiting for a senior technical adviser/developer (IT specialist III) to serve as the Technology Division application engineer lead consultant “at the mastery level in the evaluation and selection of technology standards and governance processes as it applies to application development,” the duty statement says.

The adviser/developer “is responsible for providing technical and development consultation by advising the Technology Division executive team in the development, maintenance and organization of the state’s IT development technologies and methodologies and associated policies, standards and governance methods. These responsibilities also include productization, and implementation of these resulting development innovations requires the ability to lead and advise IT development and architecture teams to effectively develop technology innovation solutions that strategically align to its business vision,” the duty statement says.

“The IT Spec III makes recommendations to the Chief Information Officer and executives on application code standards and development policies, compliance, and on current and new IT developments. The IT Spec III works with external partners and customers on statewide efforts, which include but are not limited to departments’ and agencies’ development teams, vendors, and partners to arrive at the most appropriate application and system design or integration of multiple systems.”

The monthly salary range for this position is $8,488 to $11,375, and the application deadline is Aug. 12, according to the job posting.

The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing is recruiting for a network engineer (IT supervisor II) to oversee the department’s IT network infrastructure.

“The incumbent is responsible for designing and supporting DFEH’s technology platforms and ensure they interface with external systems,” the job posting notes. The IT specialist II works directly with the other IT specialists and associates on “all programs and projects dealing with the DFEH network infrastructure, database development, and statewide applications deployment and updates. The IT Specialist II is also responsible for designing, engineering and implementation of wireless solutions, SD-WAN and cloud network security for the DFEH.” More information about the position is available in the duty statement.

  • Experience in the maintenance and management of information technology network infrastructures
  • Experience in information technology network security
  • Experience in the maintenance and management of server environment
  • Experience in the management of Active Directory
