In a brief video posted on YouTube this week by the California Department of Technology, Panych reminds viewers of the potential risks posed by bad actors “as we deal with the digital age in our everyday lives.”
He adds: “There’s a lot of things we do here at the state to secure your data, but security is everybody’s responsibility. There are four things that everybody must do to implement security in their day-to-day digital lives.”
The CISO’s four key tips:
- Use long passwords and passphrases, and incorporate all four character types — uppercase, lowercase, special characters and numbers. Don’t reuse, share or write down your passwords.
- Use multifactor authentication, especially with financial and social media accounts and email.
- Recognize and report phishing attacks — they come via text message, email and phone calls.
- Continually update your software, your phones, your computers, your apps, your home routers and all other equipment. Make sure your settings allow for automatic patches and updates.
