False Alarm: Stockton CIO to Remain With Stockton

Editor's note: This story has been updated after Jamil Niazi made the decision to remain with the city of Stockton.

After Stockton CIO Jamil Niazi was appointed to lead the city of Vallejo’s IT and artificial intelligence work, he has decided to remain in his role with the city of Stockton.

He would have replaced former Vallejo CIO Naveed Ashraf, who took the same position with the city of Fairfield last year.

In his time with the city of Stockton, Niazi has established the city’s AI Center of Excellence, bolstered cybersecurity with AI and agentic systems and deployed AI to improve operational efficiencies across the city. He's also represented Stockton in San Jose’s GovAI Coalition.

Throughout his career, Niazi has held IT leadership roles with multiple local government organizations, including the city of Concord, the Contra Costa Water District and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

He has also spent time in the private sector, managing IT operations for companies such as Basil Seed Works and Ross Stores.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science from California State University, Northridge, as well as multiple certifications.
