In 1998, the Internet Tax Freedom Act banned taxes on Internet access and multiple taxes on electronic commerce, but the Act will expire on Nov. 1. TechAmerica issued a statement in support of its replacement, the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act (H.R. 3086 and S. 1431), by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) which is headed to the House Judiciary Committee this week. “We must not allow a patchwork of federal, state and local taxes to restrict access to this essential service,” said Elizabeth Hyman, executive vice president of TechAmerica in a release. “The Internet is now a basic necessity for our business and personal lives, and we must not allow federal, state or local taxes to hinder access for all Americans."
