California has launched a free text messaging service designed to give problem gamblers and their families instant access to counseling and other resources.
The new 24-hour service — text SUPPORT to 53342 — builds upon the existing 1-800-GAMBLER phone number, which took 19,000 calls according to statistics from 2012.
By calling or texting the helpline, gamblers and their family members can receive referrals to services provided as part of California Gambling Education and Treatment Services (CalGETS). Normal text messaging rates apply.
Services include text support, telephone counseling, one-on-one outpatient counseling for gamblers and affected family members, outpatient counseling and residential care for gamblers in need of intensive treatment. The helpline also provides information about Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon.
The helpline is operated by the California Council on Problem Gambling and Office of Problem Gambling within the California Department of Public Health. The office was moved to CDPH from the defunct Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs in 2013.
About 1% of American adults — nearly 3 million people — are pathological gamblers, according to research from the National Council on Problem Gambling. Another 15 million American may be at risk.
