The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Strategic Offender Management System (SOMS) and the Project Academy Series within the Department of Technology’s Office of Professional Development have been named finalists for a national award recognizing IT achievement in the public sector.
The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) on Tuesday named 44 finalists across 11 categories, representing projects across the country for the State IT Recognition Awards.
SOMS is the state’s integrated electronic offender management information system. The $245 million project started in 2009 with the goal of replacing and consolidating more than 40 aging electronic and paper database systems. The project, which has been called the largest of its kind in the nation, is in the maintenance and operation phase. SOMS is a finalist in the "Improving State Operations" award category.
The Project Academy Series, intended for state employees, is a regular sequence of free informational and educational seminars to help prepare the state IT workforce to deliver successful projects. Many of the sessions are available to view on YouTube. The Project Academy Series is a finalist in the "Special CIO Recognition Award" category.
More information about the awards program and a full list of finalists is available on the NASCIO website.
