UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and the University of Washington will lead one of four new regional innovation hubs for big data science funded by the National Science Foundation, the UC system announced this week.
The West Big Data Innovation Hub will focus on big data technology, managing natural hazards and resources, precision medicine, metro data science, and data-enabled science and learning.
The National Science Foundation is putting more than $5 million toward the network of “BD Hubs.” The other coordinating entities are Columbia University (Northeast Hub), the University of North Carolina and Georgia Tech (South Hub) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Midwest Hub).
Collectively the hubs will leverage commitments from 250 organizations, NSF said.
"This program represents a unique approach to improving the impact of data science by establishing partnerships among like-minded stakeholders," said Jim Kurose, NSF's assistant director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, said in a press statement Sunday. "In doing so, it enables teams of data science researchers to come together with domain experts, with cities and municipalities, and with anchor institutions to establish and grow collaborations that will accelerate progress in a wide range of science and education domains with the potential for great societal benefit."
