The city of Riverside has created a mentorship program to break down silos and foster career development, especially with millennials. The organizational chart associated with the program helps employees plan their careers based on specific skill tracks.

“It allows for succession planning, so we’ve got a lot of folks that are going to be leaving, and this is passing that information along,” Lea Deesing, the chief innovation officer for the city of Riverside, told e.Republic’s Steve Towns at last month's California Technology Forum in Sacramento.

The program has also opened up training to employees who may not otherwise have access.

“How do I give people the opportunity without having to beg for it?” Deesing said.

This is part one of a two-part interview.
