Amazon Launches Internet of Things Platform

The new platform announced Thursday will help devices attach to Amazon Web Services and each other, the e-commerce giant said.

Amazon has become the latest cloud provider to offer services supporting the Internet of Things (IoT).

The new platform announced Thursday will help devices attach to Amazon Web Services and each other, the e-commerce giant said.

“Devices connect to AWS IoT’s Device Gateway, and manufacturers can set rules for how AWS IoT handles the data they send, and the actions they take when various conditions are met (such as sending an alert when a pressure sensor reports an unusually high reading or a motion detector is triggered),” Amazon explained.

The IoT platform includes mutual security authentication, a rules engine, a virtual version of every device, and more.

Amazon said NASA and others already have been testing the company’s IoT platform.

Competitors such as Microsoft, IBM, Cisco and Intel also have recently introduced IoT products of their own. Microsoft announced its Azure IoT suite last week.
