California Considers Kiosks for Paying Child Support

The 51 Local Child Support Agencies (LCSAs) in the state have said they're interested in buying a total of 75 kiosks, although the final number is yet to be determined and will be finalized at a later date, the department said. Kiosks were piloted in Napa and Marin offices in 2014.

Local offices across California are planning to install kiosks where people can make their child support payments, according to state documents released this week.

The California Department of Child Support Services issued an invitation for bid on March 21 seeking a statewide payment processing vendor that will service the kiosks, which would accept cash, checks, credit card and debit card payments.

"Presently, all credit and debit card payments are made through DCSS’ online web application, including any in-person payments made at LCSA offices. Payments may be made from any location by computer or mobile phone," the California Department of Child Support Services wrote in the bid document.

From October 2014 through September 2015, the department said it processed nearly 398,000 credit and debit card payments amounting to more than $145 million.

The contractor would be responsible for providing the kiosks, as well as the associated hardware, software and maintenance.
