The Brown administration has appointed Chris Stevens to the position of chief counsel at the California Department of Technology, the Governor's Office announced Tuesday.

In the role, Stevens will be the Department of Technology's chief lawyer. Stevens is replacing Anthony Lewis, who left the Department of Technology earlier this year for a position at the State Compensation Insurance Fund.

Stevens has been chief counsel at the Delta Stewardship Council since 2010 and has served the public sector in various positions for more than 20 years.

Stevens was chief counsel at the California Bay-Delta Authority from 2003 to 2010, general counsel at the California Department of Food and Agriculture from 2000 to 2003 and deputy legislative counsel at the Legislative Counsel Bureau from 1997 to 2000, according to biographical information provided by the Governor's Office.

He also was a staff attorney in the Hawaii State Senate Majority Office from 1995 to 1997, and legislative counsel for the Parliament of the Republic of the Marshall Islands from 1993 to 1995.

Stevens earned a law degree from the UC Berkeley School of Law.
