In another step to increase rider safety and comfort on Regional Transit buses and light rail, Sacramento RT has released a new app that allows customers to report suspicious activity via photos, texts or six-second videos that can be sent directly to the RT Police Services.
The new app, called “Alert SacRT,” was available for download as of Monday in the Apple App Store and on Google Play. To ensure discretion, says a release from the department, “the camera flash is automatically disabled when photos are taken through the app.” Users will also be able to select locations and choose categories to report to the RTPS, and do so anonymously, if they choose. For riders without a smartphone, texts can be sent to (916) 318-3330.
Increasing numbers of transit riders are expected to use the SacRT system in the coming weeks and beyond, as Sacramento's new downtown sports and entertainment complex is slated to open in early October. RT’s app announcement follows a number of recent upgrades at SacRT, including increased cleaning schedules for trains and more security on every train during event nights.
