The California Department of Technology is asking for feedback on the draft technical requirements for a soon-to-be-released bid for Backup Storage Services.

The solicitation will be part of the department's portfolio of Vendor Hosted Software Services (VHSS). Comments are due May 5.

As currently written, the technical requirements include 96 mandatory or desirable factors. Mandatory requirements would require data be stored in the continental U.S., provide 99.9 percent availability and subscription-based services, allow the customer to set data retention time frames, encrypting data at rest and in transit.

The department would like a contract of five to seven years.

Backup Storage Services is one vertical of several planned for the Department of Technology's "Vendor Hosted Subscription Services" (VHSS) model that will make enterprise-level solutions available to multiple state agencies and departments. The department is acting as a broker for these VHSS services.

Other planned solutions in the VHSS portfolio include digital signatures, human resources software and disaster recovery.
