The former CIO of the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) is making a move this week to the Austin Transit Partnership (ATP).

Bruce Hermes left the TDA earlier this month and is set to begin his new role Monday.

He has more than 40 years of experience in IT, including leadership roles with the state's health department, the Office of Court Administration and the city of Austin.

“Bruce’s experience with leadership in IT will be a welcomed addition to the Austin Transit Partnership team as he will oversee the IT staff and the management of a portfolio of IT solutions, services and suppliers,” ATP leadership wrote in an emailed statement.

His work will include collaboration with CapMetro’s IT leadership, as the ATP “continues with the program readiness and transition to independence.”

The city of Austin and CapMetro partnered to create ATP, which oversees Project Connect, an effort to expand transit options throughout the capital region.

The ambitious project aims to add:
  • A light rail system
  • A new Green Line
  • Enhancements to the Red Line for commuter rail
  • Four new MetroRapid routes
  • An all-electric expanded bus service
  • Nine park-and-ride stations
  • One regional transit center
  • On-demand pickup and drop-off services

Hermes will report to Alex Gale, senior vice president of real estate, facilities and technology services. ATP’s IT budget is $1.26 million with an overall budget of $90.6 million this fiscal year.

TDA’s CIO search continues, and the notice posted online closes June 28. The agency’s upcoming biennial budget, signed June 18, includes $10.8 million for technology.
