Austin Projects $15.6M in Utility IT Expenditures

Austin’s two largest departments, Austin Energy and Austin Water, make up 41 percent of the city’s operating budget.

According to the city of Austin’s approved 2023-2024 budget, $15.6 million in IT expenditures has been allocated for the municipal water and energy utilities as part of this fiscal year's capital improvement plan (CIP).

Austin’s two largest departments, Austin Energy and Austin Water, make up 41 percent of the city’s operating budget.

Austin Energy’s IT capital budget is $7.3 million for 2023-2024. The department has the same projected budget for 2025-2028.

Austin Water’s IT capital budget is $8.3 million for 2023-2024. The department has a projected IT capital budget of $15.3 million for 2025-2028.

In 2024, the city plans to spend $1.6 million on mobile workforce management and another $1.61 million on various supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)-related procurements and services.

The CIP does not list specific IT projects in the works for Austin Energy.

The city’s approved budget also details its plans to spend $47.2 million on IT for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport during the next five years.
