Dallas Transit Plans $179M for Capital IT Projects in Next 5 Years

Notable projects include intelligent transportation systems, video management systems, application technology and passenger information display upgrades.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) plans to invest $179 million in its communications and information systems over the next five years and more than half a million dollars in the next 20.

The transit agency’s capital improvement program for fiscal years 2024-28 includes numerous IT capital projects across four categories: agencywide, bus, commuter rail and light rail transit.

Broken down below are notable projects listed in each category and their five-year funding totals:

Agencywide: $179 million
  • $29 million for CCTV upgrades
  • $27 million for radio system upgrades
  • $16 million for application technology
  • $14 million for infrastructure technology
  • $8 million for a customer relationship management implementation
Bus: $42 million
  • $27 million for digital signage at bus stops
  • $12 million for an onboard passenger information system
  • $2 million for traffic signal timing priority
Commuter rail: $6 million
  • $3 million for intelligent transportation systems
  • $2 million for positive train control system refurbishment and replacement
Light rail transit: $26 million
  • $13 million for passenger information display system upgrades
  • $4 million for fiber-optic upgrades
  • $3 million for supervisory control and data acquisition control system upgrades
  • $3 million for intelligent transportation systems
