The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) has added new services to its statewide digital assistant, Texas by Texas (TxT), allowing users to upgrade driver’s licenses and renew boat registrations through the online platform.
“Since TxT’s public launch in 2022, more than 10.8 million Texans have created their TxT account and embraced the ease and convenience that TxT offers,” said DIR Executive Director and CIO Amanda Crawford. “At DIR, we understand what a game-changer TxT is for Texans in terms of time and cost savings that come from completing services online. And, in alignment with our mission to deliver effective, efficient digital government for the state, we’re excited to continue bringing even more agencies and services onto the TxT platform.”
Operated by Deloitte and developed as a collaborative project between DIR and several state agencies, including the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the platform includes a responsive website and mobile apps for iOS and Android devices.
In 2022, TxT was recognized nationally when it received the Digital Services: Government to Citizen award from the National Association of State CIOs. The award highlighted the platform as a multiyear digital transformation effort designed to consolidate high-value services into a centralized, account-based system.
The new driver’s license upgrade service, developed with DPS, allows users who pass a driving skills test with a participating school to convert a learner license to a provisional license. The new service, which was previously only available in person, also enables 16- to 18-year-olds to create limited-access TxT accounts to complete the upgrade process online.
The boat registration renewal service, developed in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), allows users to manage their boat records, renew registrations, replace decals or ID cards, and order additional identification, all within the TxT platform.
Other available services include driver’s license and ID renewals, vehicle registration renewals and certain professional license renewals. According to DIR, TxT currently has a 93 percent user satisfaction rating and continues to receive positive feedback from residents statewide.
