Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) Commissioner Stephanie Muth has announced her exit from the agency, effective July 31.
Muth joined DFPS as commissioner in January 2023, bringing more than 20 years of public-sector experience to the agency.
Her longest stint in public service was for 15 years with the Health and Human Services Commission, where she started as director of external relations and ended as the deputy executive commissioner for Medicaid and CHIP services.
Muth’s time with DFPS saw reduced turnover rates within the agency, a transformation of the foster care system, an expansion of Community Based Care and an improvement of placement options for youth with behavioral health needs, according to a statement from Gov. Greg Abbott.
In the statement, Abbott praised Muth for her “unwavering dedication and service to the children and families of Texas.”
“Under her guidance, the Department of Family and Protective Services made meaningful progress to improve care for our state’s most vulnerable children,” said Abbott. “Her commitment to expand innovative community-based solutions will leave a lasting impact on the state of Texas.”
Likewise, Muth thanked Abbott for appointing her as the agency’s commissioner.
“I’ve accomplished many of the goals the governor set for my time at DFPS and I am confident that the agency will continue to make progress,” said Muth. “I’m grateful to Governor Abbott for entrusting me to serve children, families and vulnerable adults in Texas.”
