Texas Health and Human Services is looking for a chief information security officer (CISO) who will report to the agency’s chief information officer.

A detailed position description was posted on LinkedIn Friday with an annual salary range of $123,600 to $208,800.

The CISO will collaborate with regulatory agencies and vendors alongside HHS IT divisions. This role requires knowledge of federal, state and local rules and regulations.

There isn’t a CISO listed on the current HHS organizational chart. Sylvia Hernández Kauffman was named CIO in August.

HHS is the largest agency in Texas. Agency leaders recently shared that there are 2,019 IT employees, 8,000 servers and 60,000 laptops and phones in its ecosystem. In 2022, its commissioner said there were 120 websites and 376 applications in play.

State agencies are required to designate an information security officer, as outlined in state code, and this role will be responsible for all aspects of planning and budgeting for information security.

That code also requires that ISOs report to agency executives, have authority over the agency information and are trained and experienced in the information security arena. Accordingly, an ISO serves as lead in case of a cybersecurity incident, implements policy and enables agency cyber posture, much of which is guided by the state.
