Henderson County Commissioners were updated about broadband connectivity in East Texas last week [May 7] and voted to continue funding the process.

They are part of a larger group of counties that are working to connect cities to broadband internet.

David Cleveland, executive director of the East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG), discussed Phase 3 of the ongoing broadband study and analysis projects.

$375,000 of the total funds used to plan and connect 14 East Texas counties and economic development corporations (EDC) was paid with grant money from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

The remaining $161,000 will be shared by the counties and EDCs.

Cleveland said this process has been a model for other areas, although it may still take a number of years to achieve full coverage.

High-speed Internet has also been used to connect to medical care. According to Cleveland, the projects are on schedule.

The process began in 2017, and funding was awarded in 2019. The court approved a motion to continue with the study and analysis projects.

Commissioners had no requests for refund of overpayment of taxes from Henderson County.
