North Texas Tollway Authority Budgets $391M for IT

Notable projects include upgrades to roadway systems, data centers, back-office systems and intelligent transportation networks.

The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) has set aside $1.8 billion for capital improvement projects and $456 million for maintenance over the next five years.

According to the agency’s Fiscal Year 2025-29 capital plan, $305 million will be used for IT capital improvement projects and $86.2 million will fund IT system maintenance.

NTTA’s IT maintenance projects for the next five years include:
  • $44.9 million for server hardware upgrades
  • $21 million for IT roadway systems
  • $9.4 million for network and communication systems replacements
  • $8.4 million for computer hardware upgrades and replacements
  • $1.5 million for software and licensing
The tollway authority’s planned capital improvements are numerous, including:
  • $34.1 million for load sharing at Equinix data center
  • $26.5 million for data center infrastructure managed services
  • $22.3 million for PCI compliance systems and services
  • $22.3 million for disaster recovery systems and services
  • $21.3 million for project management and technical support
Other notable projects include $7.4 million for virtual desktops, $5 million for national toll interoperability projects, $4.1 million for upgrading the LoneStar advanced traffic management system and $2.6 million for geographic information system enhancements.

NTTA’s procurement forecast for 2025 includes five upcoming IT purchases:
  • $20 million for a license plate image review project
  • $1 million to $5 million for about 2,300 traffic and security video cameras
  • $200,000 to $300,000 for automatic gates
  • $300,000 for hydrocarbon detection system maintenance
  • $50,000 to $100,000 for gate controller installation and maintenance
