Government technologists seeking to expand their skill set are invited to apply for the Project Management Leadership Academy (PMLA), a career-advancement program offered by the California Department of Technology (CDT).

“During the 12-week intensive program, participants will receive classroom instruction and will be paired with an experienced project manager with whom they will meet weekly to share lessons learned and best practices,” CDT says in a news release. “Leaders will also provide advice and insight as it relates to project management, and students may also shadow their leader during meetings of interest.”

The next iteration of the program runs from May 20-Aug. 7 and is open to public-sector professionals. There are no job classification prerequisites, and those new to the field of project management, or who have project management experience primarily in the private sector but are less familiar with the state’s project management practices, are ideal candidates, CDT says.

CDT advises that applicants should have at least one year of direct or indirect project management experience, and they must submit approval from their chief information officer or equivalent executive to apply. The application deadline is 5 p.m. March 17. For more details or to apply, visit the PMLA website. Those interested may also want to view some video testimonials from participants and mentors.

The PMLA program is one of several career development courses and boot camps that CDT offers to public-sector professionals. The Information Technology Leadership Academy is the flagship course and has helped many IT professionals advance through the ranks of state government to key leadership roles including chief information officer and chief technology officer.
