Departments Recruiting for Chief, Specialist Roles

The positions are in the California Department of Transportation, the Department of Finance and the Employment Development Department.

State government departments are recruiting for a variety of specialty positions dealing with technology related to transportation, finance and employment.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking a chief (IT Manager I) for its Server Infrastructure and Identity Management Office. The office is responsible for managing Windows, Linux and Solaris servers and the Caltrans Identity Management Vault.

“The incumbent oversees a highly complex physical and virtual server infrastructure and the department’s identity management system and has full management responsibility for standards, processes, procedures for the analysis, design, implementation, maintenance, operation and procurement of server technology and identity management solution,” the job posting says. “The incumbent has full management responsibility for organizing, planning, coordinating, directing and controlling all activities associated with the day-to-day operations of the Server Infrastructure and Identity Management Office.”

The Department of Finance is recruiting to fill an IT Specialist II position to serve on the Enterprise Systems Development team and be responsible for leading the web team in development and maintenance of department’s websites, graphic design and remediation of electronic documents to comply with accessibility requirements.

“This position will provide technical support to the department’s projects involving web development utilizing Word Press and SharePoint environments,” the job posting says. “This position utilizes expert skills in graphic design, video production and coding, testing and maintaining custom, interactive, secure, mission critical websites and web accessibility requirements. The specialist must have the ability to learn new concepts, understand system to system relationships and interfaces, and maintain cooperative working relationships with business partners and the development team to identify goals and objectives.”

Desirable qualifications include:
  • Strong analytical skills and experience resolving complex problems or issues.
  • Ability to develop training materials and conduct customer training.
  • Ability to design and build web pages in both WordPress and SharePoint environments.
  • Ability to conduct unit, system integration, regression and acceptance testing.
  • In-depth experience with web development, both server-side and front-end logic.
  • Professional experience with designing logos, cards, brochures and other graphic materials for publication and/or electronic distribution.
  • Knowledge of best practices for web application development frameworks.
  • Experience and proficiency in using Adobe products including, but not limited to, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Dreamweaver.
  • Working knowledge of macOS and Linux environments.

The role has a monthly salary range of $8,127 to $10,894, and the application deadline is Dec. 23.

The Employment Development Department is recruiting for a technology deputy chief (Staff Services Manager III) to plan and direct the activities of the following teams:
  • Technology Integration Unit, which designs and implements enhancements to Disability Insurance Branch business applications.
  • Business Integration Unit, which plans, coordinates and communicates enhancements to business applications. The unit assists in the development of training materials, validation of help text and information text, and new policies and procedures.
  • Technology Resolution Support Unit, which triages internal and external incidents such as system outages, duplicate records, incorrect claims data and technical data issues that prevent external customers from registering or accessing their accounts.
  • Automated Systems Liaison Unit, which supports the implementation, tracking and monitoring of IT procurement, hardware and software upgrades, fixes and inventory, along with Global Security and Share Point Administrator.
