An upcoming members-only briefing will offer an insider’s look at California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) operations. That event is scheduled for March 12.

Both CalPERS and CalSTRS are titans in the public pension space, representing two of the largest in the country in their focus areas.

CalPERS, for its part, provides defined benefit retirement and health programs for more than 2 million state employees, retirees and their families.

CalPERS CIO Stephenson Loveson and Chief Operating Officer Doug Hoffner will provide members with a glimpse of their strategic IT priorities, modernization challenges and where innovative solutions could be useful.

Loveson has held the CIO role since 2023 and has been with the department since 2010 in various capacities. Hoffner joined the department as its interim CEO in 2016 and has served in several leadership roles before taking over as chief operating officer in 2019.

CalPERS boasts an annual budget of around $584 million, with an estimated IT budget of $21.5 million, according to Industry Navigator.

CalSTRS, meanwhile, is the largest teachers’ retirement system in the country, responsible for the retirement, disability and survivor benefits of more than 1 million public school educators.

Chief Technology Officer Ashish Jain and Chief Operating Officer Lisa Blatnick will discuss their challenges, modernization goals and upcoming technology needs during the briefing.

Jain has held the CTO role with CalSTRS since 2013, and previously served as the deputy CIO for California Prison Health Care Services. Blatnick has been with CalSTRS since 2003, serving as its chief of administrative services before taking over as COO in 2021.

CalSTRS has a proposed operating budget of $447.2 million and has submitted a $10 million funding request for enterprisewide IT-related strategic support.

The briefing will be held at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. March 12. Members can contact Audrey Houser to register or for more information.
