ODI Seeks Ideas for Innovation Showcase on L.A. Wildfire Recovery

The application deadline for the April 30 event is 8 a.m. Monday. The invitation-only event — billed as “strictly for market research” — won’t necessarily lead to a procurement.

A colorful lightbulb shattering against a dark background.
The California Government Operations Agency and its Office of Data and Innovation have scheduled an Innovation Showcase, intended to bring together the public and private sectors to resolve a particular challenge — in this case, wildfires.

The application deadline is 8 a.m. Monday for the event, and “vendors and innovators” whose ideas are chosen for further consideration will be invited to attend a Zoom session from 1-3 p.m. on April 30.

For the event, ODI’s prompt says: “Los Angeles experienced devastating wildfires in January 2025. Rebuilding is a complex and evolving process. The state wants to make it easier for survivors to rebuild and recover. We want to hear your proposal for how to immediately support survivors and/or the state’s rebuilding efforts.”

Suggestions and proposals addressing the challenge will be screened and presented to state technology leaders and their teams.

“The Innovation Showcase is not open to the public and will not be recorded,” ODI says in its announcement of the event. “Innovators will be allowed to watch other innovators’ presentations.”

ODI emphasized that it welcomes “all kinds of solutions.”

“You may apply with an IT or technical solution,“ the announcement reads. “We’re especially interested in non-IT solutions that are community-, process- or accessibility-based. We encourage both private and non-profit organizations to apply.”

The event — billed as “strictly for market research” — won’t necessarily lead to a procurement. State teams across entities and departments will join to learn about innovation opportunities.

Interested applicants will be asked to provide:
  • Contact information
  • A one-page attachment with details about the organization.
  • A brief description of the innovative idea.
  • A one- or two-page attachment with more detail about the idea. Applicants must specify how the idea solves the particular problem and the intended outcome.
Applicants should not include pricing, costs or estimates for any suggested goods or services, but they may include a short demo video. Applications will be screened for relevance and viability, and those who best address the challenge will be invited to present at the Innovator Showcase. Presentations must be 10 minutes or less.

The California Department of Technology held a similar event in February, the L.A. Wildfires Response and Recovery Technology Showcase. Those who submitted proposed solutions should not submit the same solution for the ODI event.
