Vendors working in the agentic AI and cybersecurity spaces should watch for opportunities coming out of Placer County. Officials are eyeing an expansion of AI tools and the outsourcing of cybersecurity monitoring and response.

The Placer County Information Technology Department officials recently presented on some of the emerging issues and priorities they see for the department in the near future.

Among those priorities were increased interest in agentic AI capabilities, cybersecurity operations, an application tracking system and a dedicated Fire Department command channel.

Perhaps most interesting to vendors are the agentic AI front and cybersecurity operations front. Officials noted during the April 30 Board of Supervisors meeting that they were actively looking at opportunities to build out agentic AI and 24/7/365 cybersecurity operations.

Concerning the latter, a request for proposals is currently being developed.

AGENTIC AI ON THE MENU

The county is looking at opportunities to deploy agentic AI to improve staff efficiency. Officials mentioned opportunities in areas around document processing, case management and system navigation, among others.

While presenters noted the opportunities created by the emerging technology, they also noted the need to be proactive and disciplined in the policy approach to its implementation.

24/7/365 SECURITY OPERATIONS CENTER

Officials stressed the need for a 24/7/365 security operations center that they say will be outsourced to a private company. A request for proposals is underway and the cost for the services has been built into the department’s budget.

Increases to the volume and sophistication of modern cyber attacks are forcing the department to consider full-time cybersecurity monitoring and response over monitoring threats during regular business hours and on an on-call basis.

HUMAN RESOURCES APPLICATION TRACKING SYSTEM

Officials could not disclose much about this project, as it is under procurement, but the department has been working with the human resources department to update the application tracking system. The cost for this project was also built into the IT budget.

The item is expected to be before the Board of Supervisors next month.

PLACER COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT COMMAND CHANNEL

Currently, the Placer County Fire Department is using its dispatch channel to handle an increasing number of incident calls. There is an effort underway to create a dedicated incident channel.

The county is working with neighboring jurisdictions and Motorola to plan out that system in the coming year.
