Santa Monica Issues RFP for Curb Management Tech

The city of Santa Monica is looking for a vendor to help it manage an increasingly sought-after piece of urban real estate — the curb. The influx of delivery vehicles, coupled with high demand for vehicle parking, is prompting officials to take a new approach to the curbside.

The city of Santa Monica is looking for a technology vendor to supply a curb management solution in a recently released request for proposals.

The solicitation outlines the need for curb management software and hardware to address the city’s increasing demands on this valuable urban real estate, and the desire to develop what it calls “smart curbs and loading zones.”

“The city seeks to solicit solutions on emerging areas, including enhanced video and sensor technologies; data collection, analysis and organization and payment solutions, and/or enforcement enhancement,” the solicitation reads.

According to the RFP, competition for curbside space among passenger and delivery vehicles and outdoor dining uses is increasing, causing unsafe conditions as drivers ignore signage and block other parts of the thoroughfare.

“Particularly in downtown Santa Monica, short-term curb users such as freight or passenger carriers struggle to find appropriate curb space at which to do business due to high demands for parking, access and outdoor dining uses. The result is frequent double parking or unsafe blockages of red curbs, bike lanes and center left turn lanes.”

To be considered as a potential vendor, respondents must have a minimum of three years of experience providing smart curb management solutions, and the technology must integrate with relevant city systems.
