Austin Budgets $145M for Communications and Technology in 2024

Austin’s Communications and Technology Management Department has an IT capital budget of $34.8 million for 2024.

According to the city of Austin’s approved 2023-2024 budget, the city’s Communications and Technology Management Department (CTM) has a $144.7 million operating budget for IT as part of its capital improvement plan (CIP) this fiscal year.

Austin’s Communications and Technology Management Department has an IT capital budget of $34.8 million for 2024.

For 2025, $7.61 million has been allocated, followed by $3.9 million in 2026 and $1.7 million in 2027.

The largest allocations listed in the department’s IT budget involve critical technology replacements, with an estimated total of $13.7 million allocated for CTM, wireless and Combined Transportation, Emergency and Communications Center (CTECC) replacements.

Other notable projects listed in the department’s CIP are as follows:
  • $2.4 million for a backup center
  • $2.2 million for department IT initiatives
  • $1.9 million for Capital Area Emergency Communications District (CAECD) regional projects
  • $1.8 million for wireless IT initiatives
  • $1.4 million for city IT initiatives
  • $1.4 million for infrastructure public safety
  • $1.2 million for Greater Austin-Travis County Regional Radio System (GATRRS) restoration

The city’s approved budget also details its plans to spend $47.2 million on IT for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in the next five years, as well as $15.6 million in utility IT expenditures.
