The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) has named Deputy Commissioner Audrey O’Neill as its acting commissioner.
O’Neill assumed the role on Aug. 1 following former Commissioner Stephanie Muth’s departure on July 31.
O’Neill joined DFPS in May 2023 as the assistant deputy commissioner. She steps into the acting commissioner role with nearly two decades of experience in public service, much of it focused on the state’s most vulnerable populations. Her background includes extensive leadership within programs tasked with investigating abuse and neglect, as well as overseeing strategic policy and operational initiatives at the state level.
Before joining DFPS, O’Neill held positions within the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the State Auditor’s Office, with responsibilities that included data operations, fraud analytics and strengthening audits.
O’Neill holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Southwestern University.
Gov. Greg Abbott is responsible for appointing the agency’s leadership. No timeline has been announced for a permanent replacement.
