Departments Seeking Engineers, ISO, Designer, Project Manager

Recruitments are being done by the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the Department of Finance, and the Office of Legislative Counsel.

Departments in state government are recruiting for several IT roles, including engineers, information security officer, architect, designer, and project manager.

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), the nation’s largest public pension fund, is seeking a principal network engineer (IT Specialist III) with “a passion for designing, architecting, building, and operating complex computer networks in a multi-site and multi-cloud model.”

According to the job posting, “This role will focus on data centers, campus networks, WAN and cloud network automation, with responsibility for designing and managing the implementation of critical network solutions to modernize CalPERS’ network infrastructure.”

Desirable qualifications for the position include:
  • Networking certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Professional/Expert (CCNP/CCIE) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
  • Extensive experience in network design and implementation including LAN, WAN, data centers and cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of network security principles, including firewalls, VPNs and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and experience with secure network design and risk assessment.
  • Expertise in emerging technologies including familiarity with software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), cloud networking, and other emerging technologies that drive modern network architectures.
  • Understanding of cloud networking architectures, including hybrid and multi-cloud environments, with experience in designing and managing networks using platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

CalPERS is also seeking a principal user experience designer (IT Specialist II) to “help define and drive the future of CalPERS UX/UI digital products and align to CalPERS’ mission.”

“You have an excellent understanding of human-computer interaction principles, a lens for clean and artful design, and possess excellent interaction design skills,” the job posting says. “You’re able to translate high-level product and user requirements into interaction flows and artifacts and transform them into elegant, intuitive and functional user interfaces.”

In addition, the duty statement notes that the incumbent “performs as the principal subject matter expert (SME). The principal UX designer will work closely with the director of UX, and an existing team of high-performing UX designers, to create the user experience for the core journeys and the more complex products of myCalPERS Member Self-Service, CalPERS Internet and Intranet, and other digital products the team supports. The principal UX designer will partner closely with business analysts, developers, testers and SMEs to enhance the overall quality, value and experience of our products and core journeys.”

Desirable qualifications include:
  • Ability to distill business requirements and stakeholder input into simple, intuitive UX/UI design concepts.
  • Proven experience in designing, prototyping and launching exceptional end-to-end user experiences.
  • Demonstrate experience in applying and evangelizing the human-centered design process.
  • Proven experience in web and mobile UI technologies, usability and accessibility standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The California Department of Finance (DOF) is recruiting for an information security officer (IT Supervisor II) to participate in the planning, development and management of information security incident responsibilities and to develop and implement policies and standards addressing information security.

“The ISO investigates, resolves and reports through appropriate channels all information security incidents; monitors vulnerabilities, threats and incidents; performs departmental risk assessments; [and] conducts and documents information security awareness training for all employees on an annual basis,” the job posting says.

In addition, according to the job posting and duty statement, the incumbent:
  • Provides advice and technical assistance to management on information security-related issues;
  • Co-leads projects to determine the potential risk of exposure of all information assets;
  • Serves as a consultant on the implementation of laws, policies and standards regarding information security;
  • Serves as the liaison to all state government control agencies in communicating the department’s security policies, incident responses and action plans, and ensures all Government Code and State Administrative Manual requirements are met.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is seeking an IT project manager (IT Specialist II) to serve as a business analyst, demonstrating an in-depth understanding and level of expertise of application services and technologies and performing the most complex business analyst tasks timely and independently.

According to the job posting, the incumbent also serves as a project manager on assigned activities related to the development and maintenance of various applications and technologies and supports enterprise application development efforts, which may include planning, analysis, design, technical documentation, testing, deployment, user training and troubleshooting.

Desirable qualifications for this role include:
  • PMP certifications
  • Experience with project management, procurement, and change management
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities and an ability to multitask

The Office of Legislative Counsel is seeking a virtualization/storage engineer (IT Specialist II) to perform advanced administration, configuration, deployments and support of VMware virtualization infrastructure and related hardware/software.

According to the job posting, the incumbent:
  • Provides configuration and management of centralized enterprise-grade storage arrays.
  • Provisions storage by zoning and masking centralized storage to Windows/Linux/ESXi hosts using SAN management tools.
  • Is responsible for creating and maintaining the virtual server backup technology to protect the virtual server infrastructure.
  • Is responsible for assessing customer technical solutions to ensure that they adhere to the technical infrastructure and are in alignment with the Legislative Data Center’s Enterprise Architecture to address the support, reliability, and performance aspects of infrastructure systems.
  • Will work on keeping systems patched and secure while always keeping up to date on emerging technology with the ability to engineer IT solutions for the future.
