At an Industry Insider — California Member Briefing this week, CIO Ajit Girn and his team from the Employment Development Department told a roomful of vendors about the progress it's made in the five years since the pandemic struck — and what it needs going forward.
“Silicon Valley has entered a state of uncertainty and flux,” said Russell Hancock, president of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, a San Jose-based think tank. “It’s driven employers to focus on efficiency and sustainable profits.”
Representatives for Cal OES said the state can send out alerts on behalf of counties, but it relies on local governments to provide the information about which areas should receive the alert and what it should say.
The recruitment signals some key changes in state technology leadership. Two weeks ago, Gov. Gavin Newsom named Nick Maduros to the role of GovOps secretary, succeeding Amy Tong.

As the mammoth six-year, $1.2 billion project moves ahead, the state Legislative Analyst’s Office has published a new report that spotlights several areas where legislators’ attention is critical to keep the undertaking moving on time and on budget.

The positions are bureau chief, enterprise system supervisor and cloud developer-administrator.
The virtual event Wednesday is intended to help industry members navigate new rules and legislation governing use of generative AI for those doing business with the state.
“My goal is to become a trusted adviser by leveraging my public-sector knowledge and experience to provide Info-Tech members the tools and guidance to ensure successful execution of the organization’s mission-critical priorities,” the veteran technology leader told Industry Insider — California.

The California Department of Technology is seeking a system administrator, and EDD is seeking a lead developer for the Product Development Division of EDD’s IT Branch.
The tech leader for the Employment Development Department and two colleagues from EDD will address vendors and other attendees at the event Tuesday.
“We’re the tech capital of the country, and yet we’re unable to buy the software that makes it possible for us to function in the 21st century,” said Supervisor Bilal Mahmood.
Amy Tong, who’s held the role since February 2022, is moving from the Government Operations Agency to the Governor’s Office to advise on wildfire issues and “will continue to lead the administration’s efforts on improving government efficiencies and driving innovative government solutions,” said a news release.
“I’ve always been a transformationalist and innovator,” Cruz told Industry Insider — California. “I know how vendors engage with government … and now I can help educate government about price points and getting a cost-effective rate.”
The initiative brings together thousands of data points from the federal and state governments as well as from California’s 58 counties to provide a regularly updated database on housing and homelessness.
The assistant will also serve as the county chief technology officer and as an adviser to the chief information officer.
