The governor has already taken several actions regulating AI. The most recent one pushes forward on state development of independent AI auditors and asks the Government Operations Agency to give recommendations on how to require companies to create a “kill switch” for frontier models.
The new appointee, who comes from the Department of Managed Health Care, replaces former Chief Counsel Sahana Ayer, who now works for another California agency.
Doug Novak, a three-decade veteran in the state cybersecurity space, has announced that he will retire from public service at the end of the month. Novak had been serving as the acting state CISO following the departure of Vitaliy Panych in July.
